English for Professional Negotiation
Cambridge Law Studio (CLS) and Cambridge Finance Language Studio (CFLS), are running an intensive 3 day course on “English for Professional Negotiation” in September and October 2004. The course is designed for financial and legal professionals who need to negotiate with colleagues in technical English and wish to progress their present level of English to gain confidence in effective negotiation.
The course will be held at Girton College, University of Cambridge. The number of participants on each course is limited to twelve, and early booking is recommended.
Course Structure
The course is based around the imaginary scenario of a proposed joint venture (JV) to sell UK manufactured products in the Spanish market. Top executives of the Spanish and English companies have agreed broad principles but further detailed negotiation is required before the JV is formed.
Participants will be split into two groups, each containing a mix of legal and finance professionals. One group represents the UK company and the other the Spanish company. Each group will be given extensive information about their companies. Using this the groups will negotiate to determine:
~ The management structure of the JV
~ Each companies contribution to the start up costs of the JV
~ The profit share arrangements of the JV
~ The representations and warranties each company will provide
The groups will then produce a draft contract and a press release incorporating the outcome of their negotiations.
