THE CAMBRIDGE FINANCE LANGUAGE STUDIO METHOD

We continually monitor and develop our courses to ensure that they meet the real needs of finance professionals. We have developed an efficient and effective 4 step method that will dramatically increase your knowledge and confidence of using specialist financial English in just a few day.

STEP 1. A FIRM FOUNDATION

We begin with essential words, concentrating on the precise vocabulary that you need to reach your learning goals.

Example target language

accumulated (adjective)

depreciation (noun)

consolidate (verb)

We give each participant a dictionary that contains key vocabulary that finance professionals use on a daily basis. We will check your pronunciation and understanding of the new words.

STEP 2. BUILDING AND PROGRESSING

We then move on to short, authentic blocks of financial English. From your knowledge of technical vocabulary you can now explain complex sentences in clear, plain English. You can begin to deal with short extracts or complicated sentences from any financial document.

Example target language

Your tax return must be completed, signed and submitted to the Inspector of Taxes by 31 January to prevent penalties being charged.

At this stage we will introduce the different styles of financial English used in the UK and USA and complete some exercises using and comparing both styles.

STEP 3. GAINING CONFIDENCE

We continue with intensive analysis of financial and commercial documents so that you can practise your new skills. Challenging and interesting study materials give you a unique opportunity to learn and discuss financial English in a supportive environment.

Working with colleagues or as an individual, you can now analyse and advise upon a wide variety of financial documents.

Example target language

Goodwill arising on acquisitions, being the excess of cost over the fair value of the net assets acquired, is charged against reserves in the year of acquisition.

We will ask you to:

Explain the meaning in plain English

Explain specific vocabulary

Re-write the text in a different style

Discuss conclusions with your colleagues

STEP 4. SUCCESS AND CONSOLIDATION

You now have the English language skills that you need in today’s financial environment. Through practise you will consolidate your confidence in understanding and analysing:

accounts

commercial documents

e-mails and formal letters

which will better prepare you for:

interviews

conferences

meetings and negotiations

We will advise you on the best way to keep your study skills up-to-date once you have completed your course and encourage you to keep in contact with the trainers and participants who worked with you at Cambridge Finance Language Studio.
